Chapter 52 : Human

Now then…

To be honest, I’m not really fond of humans. 

But I do have to agree the dessert they made is one of the best foods ever. 

“Fufufu~ This sweet matcha parfait that’s only available in this backwater village is super delish!~”

Putting up my human disguise, I sneaked into this human village.

The owner only opened his sweets stall in this small village and he didn’t have any fixed schedule either. 

Sometimes he opened his stall, other times he didn’t. 

He was something akin to a legend, given how delicious his sweets and his whimsical tendency. 

Maybe the owner was simply just an oddball?

No one really knows but we could all agree the sweets he made was outstanding.. 

Another thing, recently Velke didn’t forbid me from going out too much. 

There were various reasons behind it. 

One, I was stronger now.

And the other was because it was important for me to see the world. 

He didn’t explicitly say them all but I was sure me being stronger was one of the biggest reasons why he let me wander off into the human town. 

In any way, I was happy I was able to go travelling to eat a lot of delicious sweets.

“Onii-chan, are you also eating a parfait?”

Suddenly a young boy around 5-6 years old talked to me.

He was also holding a similar looking parfait as me.

“Yup! That’s right!”

I answered excitedly.

“It’s delicious, right?”

“It is delicious!”

The two of us smiled at each other as we stuffed our cheeks full with a spoonful of sweet, and cold delicious goodness.

Then all of a sudden, the people in the village began to run in panic. 

“You two! Why are you guys still eating parfaits nonchalantly like that?! It’s almost 5 o’clock! Hurry and get inside the house!” 

A kind looking old lady shouted at us.

Huh?

Maybe there was a local rule in this village that all children had to go home before 5 p.m.?

What a strange rule though…

The parents grabbed their children’s hand and went on saying,”It’s dangerous!” while dragging them into the nearest house.

The old lady that had shouted at me also grabbed my hand and took me into this small house.

I wonder what’s going on?

As soon as I was safely tucked in the house, I heard the sound of an earth shattering growl. 

GROAAAAAAAAAAAAARRR

It was so loud I could even feel the small house shaking from it. 

W-what is this sound?!

Looking at my panicked face, the old lady explained. 

“That’s the sound from the remaining wyvern.”

“Remaining?”

“Yes, 2 years ago the hero killed the wyverns but turned out somehow there was a single egg left behind. Recently, the grown wyvern started to attack this village.”

“I-I see…”

Mistaking my worried expression as fear, the old lady immediately added.

“But don’t worry! We already sent a request to the castle so soon enough the hero will come and save us again!”

Her kind gesture was meant to assure me but I became even more panicked instead. 

I had to quickly go and save the wyvern!

“The wyvern will go on rampage for about an hour but as long as we’re staying inside the house, we’ll be safe.”

The old lady then hugged me tightly, despite her words, I could feel her hands trembling slightly.

“I forgot my teddy bear.”

A child chipped in.

While I was being suffocated by the old lady’s voluptuous stomac- I mean, breast, I could see the small child was sitting over there with his mother.

The mother was talking with her neighbours and didn’t seem to notice her son had already jumped down from his seat and dashed toward the door. 

I wanted to grab the child’s hand and told him to wait but the old lady was surprisingly strong!

The kid then slowly opened the door and left the house.

Doesn’t anyone else notice that?! A child just left!

I struggled out of the old lady’s stom- I mean, breast and went after the kid. 

“Little boy!” 

The old lady shouted in panic. 

“The other kid already went out first!” 

Ignoring the lady’s worried shout, I ran outside to search for the boy and found him almost immediately in this empty village. 

The boy already had his teddy bear in his hand and was running around with a clear expression of confusion and panic in his face.. 

Without any second thought, I ran toward the boy. 

“It’s dangerous here so let’s go back with Onii-chan to your mama, okay?!”

“Mr.Teddy Bear is also coming?”

“Mr.Teddy Bear too!”

As we were running in the empty village, I could hear the sound of wings flapping in the sky. 

The wyvern dove down and landed right in front of us, blocking our way with his big body. 

A deep rooted hatred could be seen from his gaze. 

“Grroooaaarrr!”

The wyvern growled at us. 

Ah?!

I’m Maou!

I can make him into my subordinate! He will follow my order if I use that skill!

But before I could do anything else, the wyvern pulled his long neck back and breathed out a string of searing flame. 

I have to save this kid!!!

But then a thought hit me. 

This kid is a human.

I… Who should I help?

Which one… Should I help?

I… I don’t know…

“Shield!”

A transparent barrier appeared and protected us from the flame. 

I decided to help this young boy. 

This kid that I helped, when he grew up, there was a chance he might bare his fangs at the demonkind.

Since he had suffered at the hands of the demon.

Just like what the wyvern did to the human. 

The chain of revenge will keep on going and going like an endless circle. 

But…

A child is a child. 

To kill such a precious soul.. I.. I couldn’t do it. 

“Get back! Wyvern!!!”

“GROAAAARR!!”

The angry wyvern roared back.

“There’s no point in going on rampage here! You have to get away from here!” 

I took off my human disguise, revealing my demon appearance to the wyvern. 

((This presence… Maou-sama…?))

I could hear the wyvern speaking directly into my head. 

“Yes! That’s why, you need to leave this place immediately!”

((Why did you protect that?))

Even through the inner voice, I could clearly see the venom in his words.. 

((That thing is a human!!))

The wyvern asked but… 

Currently, I don’t have the answer yet. 

But.. I….

“Even if they’re human, I will never allow anyone to prey on the weak.”

That was the only answer I could muster right now. 

((I see. So that’s your answer, Maou-sama.))

“I know I haven’t given you a satisfactory answer yet but we don’t have much time right now. Please give me some time and I’ll surely answer your question without fail.”

(( Maou-sama, we are your loyal subjects. We will oblige to your wishes.))

But…

I could feel the wyvern was not convinced yet. 

“Oh crap! We have to leave now! Now!”

((By your will.))

The wyvern bit on the scruff of my neck and flapped his wings, taking us away to the sky. 

“Onii-chan!”

“You! Make sure to return to your mama, okay?!”

I yelled toward the young boy as the wyvern flew us away from the small village.

……….. A little while after that wyvern incident….

I went back to the village to eat the limited deluxe chocolate parfait. 

In that village, there was a newly built bronze statue. 

It was the statue of a young boy roughly 10 years old. 

Apparently the boy was worshipped as a saint for sacrificing his life to ward off the wyvern.

Damn. I’m being worshipped….

I quietly bought the parfait and left the village hurriedly. 

I don’t think I could go back to this village again….
