Chapter 42 : Harpy

I went southwest of Gunnal Lake to rescue the surviving demon with Velke. 

“Th-this is the ruins….”

Thick foliage protruded from the creak of the ruins, towering into the blue sky. 

Judging from the remaining structure of the building, the ruins must have used to be a fortress but those glorious days were nothing but memories now.

Rather… It wouldn’t be surprising if a ghost were to suddenly appear….

Even though I came during the day, this place looked dimly light, kind of creepy like a setting from a horror movie.

“Should I inspect the surrounding area first?”

“N-no. Let’s do it together….”

I stepped into the ruins anxiously. 

Truth to be told, I’m not good with scary things like ghosts. 

I used [Perception] to scan the area for any sign of demon and received feedback immediately. 

There was a demon nearby, a level 35 harpy.

No, not ‘a’ demon. 

I sensed multiple demons in the area. 

It appears the demon I was about to encounter was not alone. 

Me and Velke were exploring the surrounding area when we heard a rustling sound.

“Hiiiiih!!”

“Who is it?!”

Something shiny flew toward us but Velke immediately drew his sword out to parry it.

“So you guys have finally come to kill us!!”

Seemed like this young harpy boy was the one that tried to attack us.

The shiny object I saw before was the harpy’s sharp talon.

He glared at us with discernment.

“I-I’m the Maou!”

I peeked from Velke’s looming figure and declared loudly.

“Huh? A snotty little brat like you? You kidding me?”

H-he doesn’t believe me?!

The harpy boy flew forward to attack us again. 

“Master, please step away.”

Velke easily parried the young boy’s attack again. 

Maybe because the difference in their level was too great, the harpy appeared to be overwhelmed. 

“Halbiut, what’s happening?”

A dignified voice came from the inside of the ruins. 

“Haium, stay inside!!”

From the ruins, a beautiful harpy who seemed to be around 17 years old came out. 

Behind him, there were several happy about 5 or 6 years old peeking out while hiding away from us. 

“So you guys are the harpies! I’m Maou! I’ve come to provide you guys with shelter!”

“Ma-maou-sama you say?!”

The beautiful harpy called Haium exclaimed in surprise. 

“Haium! There’s no way a midget like him is Maou-sama! He must be one of those human’s underling, trying to lure us out!”

“What a rude little bastard. Maybe I should burn your body to cinder?”

Velke seemed about to snap because the harpy called Halbiut kept on disrespecting me. 

Confused and panicked, I began to chant a spell. 

“Submit! My fellow demon!! I command the blood that flows through your body! Submit to me!”

The Demon King Submission should work for a demon with lower level than me!

Halbiut’s body contorted in pain, he gasped for air before he finally prostrated before me.

“Dammit… Why…”

“That’s the proof that I’m a Maou. I come to protect you guys from the humans. If you stay here, humans will come to eradicate you. Let’s go back to Maou Castle with me.”

Haium also kneeled before me and with his crisp bell like voice pleaded at me.

“W-what a surprise! Th-thank you Maou-sama for coming to save us. My little brother, Halbiut always protected us from the humans and because of that he’s always been wary of any possible attack. Hence… Please allow me to pay for his crime of suspecting you with my own life.”

“Haium! What are you saying?!”

“Halbiut, I will leave our younger brother to you.”

Oh… They’ve gone into their own world, ignoring my initial purpose of coming here behind.

“Haium, Halbiut and the other younger brothers.. It is only natural to always bare your fangs to protect oneself and family. Submit to me and I will forgive your mistake. You need to stand up now and prepare to leave this place.”  

“Oh my! Thank you very much… Maou-sama, I’m eternally grateful to you!”

When the harpies were in the middle of preparing to move out, Velke returned.

Right. Before the adventurer went on for the subjugation, they had someone spying the surrounding area and stood watch for any changes. 

I wasn’t sure what we should do with him but in the end I decided it’d be best if we tampered with his memories. 

“No, if we kill him the human will realize there was another demon in here. It’d be bad for us if the human started suspecting something. We should alter his memory.”

“Understood.”

“Vii, are you here?”

“Here I am.”

I called out for Vii and he replied immediately from within the darkness. 

As the glob of darkness dissolved, we could see the figure of Vii the vampire standing in the middle of the ruins.

“If I’m not wrong, you’re good at tampering with human’s memories, right? Can you please alter this guy’s memories so he could only remember the harpies ran away under his watch.”

“As you wish. In return for my service, would you be willing to wear a maid uniform and welcome me home while doing heart symbol with your hand?”

“Rejected.”

“Then how about if you wear a cat’s ear along with a matching tail and you have to end your sentence with ‘nyan’ for me?”

Ugh. Cat’s ear, huh.. But I guess it’s just like mimicking cat sidhe so it should be alright?

Ah, well.

“Okay I will do it.”

“Then I will start altering with his memories now.”

Velke looked at us both disapprovingly all the while Vii grasped the human’s head to alter his memories.

After waiting for the harpies to finish their preparation and for Vii to alter with the spy’s memories, we all went back to Maou’s Castle.

All the young harpies boys were brimming with curiosity and vigor, they stared at the castle in bewilderment.

“There are kids around your age here. Be nice and play together with them, okay?” 

Having said that the harpies boy dashed off in a flash, leaving both Haium and Halbiut away.

“The young boys all look so happy… Maou-sama, thank you very much.” 

“……Thanks.”

“Half a year ago our village was raided by the humans and most of the harpies died on that day. Me and the other children were kept in the black market as a merchandise for humans with peculiar tastes but just before we were about to be sold, we ran away.”

“Yes, we were told the harpy’s singing voice is regarded with high value in the human society.”

To show his gratitude to Maou-sama for saving them, Haium began to sing.

Simply put, the harpies’ voices were beautiful.

Now then, time to move on to the next subject.
